Jan Hanway
Jan is an amateur photographer who has lived in the Bay Area all her life. Her love of photography began five years ago at Skyline College when she took her first photography class. She prefers the black and white process to working with color and works almost exclusively in medium format. Her goal is to photograph her subject with as much detail as possible while setting a mood through composition and lighting. Recently, however, she has been experimenting with alternative printing techniques, especially diffusion. She received a Certificate of Merit for her entry in the 2007 Art Guild of Pacifica Exhibit for one such experimental photograph called “Tissue on Trees,” where she printed through tissue for the majority of the printing time. Jan also received Honorable Mention for the same photograph at the 2007 Skyline College Juried Student Art Exhibit. She hopes to some day have more time in the dark room or her own dark room so she can explore other alternative techniques. Jan favors landscapes, both rural and urban. She loves to travel and tries to capture the essence of the location in her pictures. She likes to call her genre “Places I’d rather be.” Being a school counselor and a therapist for thirty years, Jan searches for beauty and healing through her photography.
