Chai Henn

For me, painting is an all-consuming passion.  It enriches my life as much s my love of singing and dancing.  Never am I happier than when in the act of creating a work of art.  Once I start a new canvas, I become so obsessed with its completion that I often work well into the night, even neglecting to eat.  The act of painting itself nourishes me.

My art is primarily descriptive and realistic, yet I hope it conveys my deep emotions and my dreams, along with my vivid imagination.  I paint for myself yet I have been very fortunate that others enjoy my work and that I have been successful both in sales and in recognition.

Although I was born and raised in Japan, you won’t find any oriental flair in my work.  Instead, my many European travels have influenced me greatly.  I love to depict the charm of an Italian village café or the splendor of a Spanish castle.  Locally I love to paint along the Pacific coast as I am quite fascinated with water and small fishing boats.  Also, lonesome, sad places intrigue me—such as the woods, a quiet street, or a rowboat with nobody around.

My still lifes have won considerable awards.  Among many different objects, I have captured the essence of poppies, koi fish and the violin.

Besides painting landscapes and still lifes, I am told I have a gift for portraiture.  Apart from painting a realistic rendering, it is equally important for me to capture the subject’s heart and soul.

My art comes from a place deep within and gives me peace and purpose…if others enjoy it, so much the better!
