Alice Kelmon

I work in watercolor, encaustic, oil, printmaking, and mixed media.

In watercolor and encaustic, I generally work without a fixed reference, letting arbitrary marks occur.   My work is experimental in nature, playing with color line and shape until a subject emerges.  This is a fun way to work, free, with no rules.  My work often results in an abstract image suggesting a landscape I have seen or imagined, but mostly an atmosphere or frame of mind.

Watercolor has a fluidity, translucency and sense of impermanence that are unique to the medium, lending it well to spontaneity in creating an image.  Encaustic offers a wealth of texture, transparent depth, opacity, and the rich color of oil.  It is changeable, removable, and sometimes unpredictable, allowing for unusual combinations and happy accidents.

Other media are better suited to more planned themes that I have begun, both using various media.  These are ‘Open Book’, which is narrative and often personal, and ‘Kyoto Agreement’, which is inspired by our relationship to Mother Earth and all her denizens.
