Howard Lucas

Luke's childhood experiences in the northern mountains, valleys, deserts and coastal regions of California lead to an intimate relationship with the dynamic diversity of the natural world.

Thirty years of painting out allow an intuitive approach to transparent watercolor painting. Finding an inspiring location, the energy and qualities of a place flow into a painting.

Often Luke precedes painting by walking through and touching objects in the field or by engaging a kinesthetic dance with his arms and hands as if caressing objects in view. Establishing two to four basic forms the basic composition and begins painting the dynamics of the light, and atmosphere with color. The work becomes increasingly abstract, methodical and personal as he works to capture a moment of being.

Luke also creates a variety of abstract paintings including mathematical, mystical, and other themes.  Occasionally he works in oil, pastel and acrylic painting.   Luke likes pen and ink and paint sketches on the fly during his extensive travels.

After 32 years of service as a public school teacher, Luke retired and established the Mt. Lassen Art Center, an art school and gallery, in Viola, CA.  His parents and family lived in Pacifica for many years.
