I like making things with my hands, though as a kid I specialized in taking things apart (a great annoyance to my parents). I still do it. Found objects are stripped down to the essential parts. I'll even scavenge flotsam and jetsam from just about anywhere. I do have criteria for these findings. It may be the gesture in a piece of wood or the color and texture of a mangled piece of plastic. Perhaps it triggers a memory. These things that I find of interest are the ingredients that initiate the sculpture making process. It starts with a feeling that is brought into the physical realm through any one of these means. Using maybe a little voodoo or alchemy but mostly time honored trial and error I'll add back or build onto a part(s) that enhances or brings to life that initial feeling. It may only take one simple move but usually requires a great deal more.
